Did you know a vine has been growing on the Castle Hill rising above the old city core of Ljubljana? And rightly so: since 1987, the capital of Slovenia has been a city of vine and wine. Ljubljana was granted this title by the OIV, the International Organization for Wine and Wine from Paris, due to the thousand-year old wine tradition as well as to the internationally renowned event Vino Ljubljana, having been organized by the GR – Ljubljana Exhibition and Convention Centre since 1955.
The International Wine Competition Vino Ljubljana is the oldest one worldwide. At the 59th Competition from 30 June to 2 July, nearly 420 samples from 19 countries will be evaluated by 48 tasters from 15 countries.
Among them will be, this year again, Guido Baldeschi, Head of Unit Oenology and Methods of analysis at OIV. Let us share his impression about the previous competition: »I was positively impressed by the perfect organization of the wine competition. The tasting room was appropriate and all the aspects related to a professional wine tasting were carefully prepared. Wine tasters came from all over the world to taste Slovenian wines and other samples coming from other countries. Slovenian wines confirm each year more and more to be protagonists of the entire wine scenario in the world. I strongly suggest to all the wine lovers to visit this beautiful country and taste its excellent wines!«
Traditionally, Vino Ljubljana grants awards for the World Champion, Slovene Champion, Champion of the Wine-Growing District, Slovene Champion of an Individual Sort, trophies Vinofed, Tsukamoto, and Akos Asvany, Winner of Slovene Wine Curiosities and Great Gold Medal.
Last year, the world champions were coming from Macedonia, Slovakia and Slovenia.
